Learn to read and write Japanese, starting with hiragana

You do not need to know any Japanese. We begin with the 46 hiragana, one stroke at a time, then teach every mark, sound, and word with Danish help.

Six marks. One turns か into が, one turns は into ぱ, one lengthens a vowel, one doubles a consonant, and two add a small y.

Who this is for

  • You are starting from zero

    You do not speak Japanese and the kana are entirely new. The first orientation explains how the syllable writing works and how to say each one before you are asked to recognize anything.

  • You speak it at home, but reading costs you

    A name, a street sign, a headline: fine, given a moment. A whole sentence is work. We go back to the kana most people skip and stay there until reading them stops being a decision.

How it works

  1. All 46 hiragana, in stroke order

    Every letter has its own drawing order (あいうえお). Write it once in the right rhythm and the syllable stays — reading and writing come from the same hand.

  2. The six marks that change the sound

    ゛ ゜ ー っ ゃ ょ sit on or after plain kana and change what you say. You learn them early, because one small mark is the difference between か and が.

  3. Real words from the first lessons

    Short, common words the course opens with: みず、パン、わたし、あなた. Worth having on their own, and readable almost immediately.

Nothing leaves your phone

There is no account and no sign-up. Your progress is written to your own browser, and it stays there.

  • No account, no email, no password.
  • No analytics. No tracking. Nothing is fetched from outside servers.
  • Progress is kept in the browser's own storage (localStorage).
  • Clear your browser data and it's gone. There is no copy on a server to lose.
